New Year, New Site

When you don't blog very often, it turns out that you don't tend you check your blog very often either. So it was with a bit of surprise that when I had a look at my site just before Christmas, I saw no content whatsoever. I logged into WordPress and had a look at the stats. Turned out that it had been that way since May, zero visits since then. It appears that an automatic update meant the theme was not compatible, and therefore served no content. Ooft.

Anyway, I'd long been thinking about ditching WordPress for something simpler. I'd read a fair bit about static site generators, and had played about with Hugo a little. This now seemed like a good time to shift everything across. I used a migration tool to turn my WP posts into Markdown, and then went through each one and fixed up any issues I could find, probably a couple of hours work. A couple of commands to generate the static files, copy it to the hosting account, and a few other minor tweaks and it was all up and running. And here we are. I'm liking the simplicity of it all, and I feel a bit more in control of things.

Now all I need to do is get some ideas and inspiration to actually start writing again…
